Researching Gambling

I had this idea to make the brother of my heroine a compulsive gambler.  In retrospect, that might not have been the smartest decision.  Researching what makes a person a compulsive gambler is harder than I thought.  There are so many psycological reasons why a person is that way, that narrowing it down to create a background is tricky.  Partly because there are different forms of gambling and destructive behaviors.

Here I was thinking that I didn’t need too much of a background for said brother, but I actually do, because, what makes him tick?  Why is it that he will come to the heroine to beg for money?  What made him get into the distructive behavior?  Why is it that the heroine didn’t have the same reasons for going in a destructive way?

I’m starting to wonder if I need to create a different history for the brother.

  1. This could be a good start. “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil…” He could have simply fallen in love with the allure of wealth, whereas the heroine could see through the lie of gambling and get-rich-quick schemes. Let us know what you decide!!
