Martha Stewart Living for Food

Martha Stewart Living magazines are most of the time, non useful. Oh sure, there are some fun crafty ideas, and to occasional recipe I’m brave enough to try, but for the most part, I look through them for fun.  Today though, it dawned on me the wonderful use of a Martha.

Fondue for that Sunday afternoon gathering

The food.

Ever take a look at  the dishes that are displayed? Every feel lost when you are setting a table in a book, and have no clue what to serve?  Enter Martha.  The dishes are divine, but no so froo froo a normal character couldn’t make them.

A Brandied Ham (for that elegant dinner)

They are elegant, they are  classy, they look scrumptious.  What more could you ask for.  And then there is always the lovely table settings and sometimes the wine accompaniment.  You have yourself a handy-dandy little bit of info there that might be hard to make up in your mind.  Trust me, I know.

For me, coming up with a dish out of nowhere  is well, like having to figure out what to have for dinner when it’s 5pm and there is nothing out.  Sometimes you just need some inspiration.  And sometimes recipe books are just not enough.

And I suppose others might say use Bon Appetit, or Food & Wine, but I think that Martha is just a bit more my style.

So, if you are in the market for designing a dish for a character’s dinner party, try Martha Stewart Living.  Maybe a setting for that cocktail party.  It just might help.

  1. What a great idea! I’d never have thought about that. You can also use those kinds of magazines to set a scene – the color of a bedroom wall, the pattern on a bedspread, etc. Love this suggestion!
